The 2.4GHz band is a strong frequency that can reach further than 5GHz, but it can also be a busy band as devices such as microwaves and cordless phones use it. WiFi commonly transmits over two radio frequency bands, 2.4 and 5GHz. What’s the difference between the 2.4 and 5GHz bands? A device that’s both a router and modem is sometimes called a gateway. Routers have physical and wireless connections. A router routes the traffic coming in and out of your home as well as between devices. What’s the difference between a router and modem? A modem only connects your house to the internet. What's the difference between a router and modem? Think of them as an added layer of protection. While many devices, such as laptops and phones, also have these features, you shouldn’t view the router’s firewall or antivirus as a replacement. Some routers come with a built-in firewall or antivirus. If your router is using it and you can change to a more secure version, then do! Extra security This older encryption is not a secure option. The common encryption types are WPA2-TKIP (WiFi Protected Access – Pre Shared Key 2) and WPA-PSK (WiFi Protected Access – Pre Shared Key), but an older version called WEP (wired equivalent privacy) is still used by some devices. When information is being transferred to or from the internet, it’s at risk of being intercepted, so all routers should use secure encryption to disguise the data. To minimise the risk of someone guessing your WiFi and admin logins, change your network’s SSID, network key/password and admin password. Using the default SSID can pose a security risk as it’s easier to identify the make and model of your router. Routers will often be sent from an ISP or manufacturer with a default SSID (Service Set Identifier) that includes their name (for example, vodafone1234567). #ADSL MODEM VS ROUTER PASSWORD#This is usually located on the bottom of your router or in the documentation.Ĭhange the default SSID and admin password #ADSL MODEM VS ROUTER MANUAL#Manual WPS: If the router doesn’t have a WPS button but is WPS-enabled, you’ll have to enter a PIN. You don’t have to enter a password as the router allows any devices to connect for a short period after the button is pressed. Use WiFi Protected Set-up (WPS): Press the router’s WPS button, find the network on your device and click connect. Once you find it, click connect and, when prompted, enter the network key/password. Manually: Open the WiFi settings on your device and look for the network SSID. The next step is connecting your devices to the router. ISP-supplied routers should come with these details already set up. If the port isn’t clearly labelled, check your router’s documentation or contact your ISP.ĪDSL and VDSL connections require more setting up as they need a username and password, and some advanced settings to be changed. This is then connected to your router’s WAN or internet port with an ethernet cable. When fibre is installed in your home, you will have an ONT (optical network terminal) box attached to a wall. If you are still unsure which device is which on your home network, contact Insteon Support or your Internet Service Provider.Fibre is the quickest and simplest broadband to set up on a router. Insteon Hub should be connected to the first router after your cable or DSL modem.
